Urban Pilgrims Secret Tour
Guided tour with actions, website, archive

On the cliché-like surface, Vienna seems beautiful, but beneath this surface it is brewing and digesting. There are real contradictions between clean and dirty, comfortable and brutal, surface and underworld. Priests, psychiatrists, and sewage workers are regarded as untouchable persons. What is bleak is confessed, what is dirty is handed over and examined – all this with the voluptuousness and slovenliness of the Balkans. Urban Pilgrimages are poetic urban extracts. Based on urban narrations and legends, they dig into the deep structure of a specific place in order to find out what exactly it is that defines that place and its people. How do individual stories and collective memory overlap and how do they relate to each other? In Copenhagen, for example, participants read bleak texts at the demolition site of the legendary Ungdomshuset during the darkest day of the year; by night they visit an indoor public pool through a secret back entrance. In Calgary, participants kiss passersby and sing love songs to ducks. Participants of the guided tours will be involved in procession-like excursions with music, encounters, sound, snacks, utensils, collective gestures exclusively designed for this place.
