The School of Accents I & II (2014)

In The School of Accents II hat Cheng ihre Künstlergespräche dokumentiert, in denen sie über The School of Accents I spricht.

Interactive video installation (DVD player, projector, table, chairs) / Single-channel video (screen, media player, headphones)

The School of Accents I is an video installation in which audiences can select and watch tutorials of how to speak English with foreign accents. In the project, Cheng invited people with different first languages on fiverr.com to teach her how to speak English with their foreign accents, using the Oath of Allegiance as the example. The project aims to explore the relationship between accent and identity, questioning the concept of a ‘standard’ accent as part of the mechanism of ideology. By trying to speak like native speakers for the English learners, did the loss of original accent reflect the abandon of one’s original identity? In The School of Accents II, Cheng documented her artist talk in which she spoke about The School of Accents I. Then she invited an English teacher to correct her pronunciation of the talk.
